What did Santa bring you for Christmas?

Under my Christmas tree I found the book Death to the BCS by Dan Wetzel, Josh Peter and Jeff Passan, all writers for Yahoo! Sports. The book is subtitled, "The Definitive Case against the Bowl Championship Series," which is a big promise to make about a subject so hotly debated for so many years. The following is a review of the book and, as usual, a contrarian point of view.

When the Lions stop hunting

Urban Meyer, head football coach at the University of Florida stepped down from his position there recently. When you talk about this, and if you are any kind of college football fan, you had to have a bit of a pause when the news came. Was he leaving for the right reasons, or is he just a "quitter?"

Story Fever

The final whistle still echoed through the stadium and the perspiration on the players had not yet dried when ESPN reporters deflated the joy of an Orange Bowl victory celebration with incessant questions about the futures of a coach and a player. It was a bit like discussing the will at the wake, and was just as disrespectful to the participants in the Orange Bowl game. The backlash was also immoderate.

Mind the gap!

The modern adage is that perception is reality and the mass media, which blurred the lines between fact and fiction in the first place, sustains the confusion by serving an undifferentiated cocktail of entertainment, opinion and journalism that viewers typically accept whole cloth as the truth. Alas, the truth often gets lost in the hype, enthusiasm and mistakes made by broadcasters. The Alamo Bowl broadcast was a case in point
A Florida Gator fan bids farewell to the school's head football coach.

Geek numbers

The gap between perception and reality in college football is enormous. Experts pontificate about strategies that aren't used and don't work. Broadcasters tell us they see things that aren't there. The old adage to believe half of what you see and none of what you hear applies for football fans. Contrary to Mark Twain's caution, statistics don't lie. At least not the ones in this article.

Glib fibs

Every so-called football expert in America has analyzed the BCS National Championship and most of what's been said about Auburn and Oregon is simply not factual. A few surprising facts about the best offense in college football and their opponent, the best team in college football, are worth knowing before you draw any conclusions about how the game will play itself out.

Gee Whiz! Bye, Bye Boise!

The president of The Ohio State University, E. Gordon Gee, made some candid remarks about the threat of small schools stealing the BCS championship this season. Were his remarks justifiable and factual or just born of fear of a level playing field?
The South Carolina Gamecocks have reached the half way point of their 2010 season. Most people have heard about the upset win over No. 1 Alabama, but how have they truly done this year? Have they met the expectations that many had for this season? The following are the mid-terms for the Gamecocks football team.
