But, am I upset that they lost four straight to their hated rivals -- the Boston Red Sox, including two of them at Yankee Stadium after having a 3-0 series lead in the ALCS?
No, not really.
It's not that the Yankees haven't been there before, they have, although I think it's high time they stop "renting" the World Series Trophy out to other teams and bring it back to the Bronx where it belongs.
They lost to Boston, not those darn Atlanta Braves, so I don't have to break out my black mourning clothes any time soon.
Before I moved to Southern California, for 15 years, I was happy to call "Beantown" my home. And, I still have really great memories of the city.
No, what really makes my brown eyes all shades of blue was the, pardon the expression, "play" of some of some of the pinstripes.
Hideki Matsui didn't disappoint me, but deep down inside I wished Jason Giambi had been well enough to play.
I even wished Roger Clemons and Andy Petitte weren't in Houston, but back in the Bronx where they also belonged.
Now a word to Alex Rodriguez -- if you're going to cheat and knock the ball out of the pitcher?s hand while running to first base, do us Yankee fans a favor, don't make it so obvious, okay?
No, it may seem like it, but really, I'm not bitter at all. The Red Sox deserved to win it. They didn't give up.
Okay, so they don't look like your clean cut, professional baseball team. IN fact, they look like they just stepped off the set of the movie, "Animal House."
Still, you can't help root for a team that affectionately calls themselves, "the Idiots."
While the Red Sox picked up players like Curt Schilling, who beat the Yankees while a member of the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Yankees once again, brought the "best team money could buy," such as players like Kenny Lofton, Gary Sheffield, Kevin Brown, and Javier Vazquez. (Though, this Yankee fan thinks George Steinbrenner should get a refund on Brown and Vazquez.)
From living in Boston and watching Red Sox games at Fenway Park, I think I have some idea of how the Red Sox Nation is feeling right now. (The Red Sox Nation, by the way is a lot more tamer than the Raider Nation in Oakland.)
They may be going through disbelief, mixed with a feeling of "Thank God, we finally beat the Yankees."
They may be even saying to themselves, "We haven't done anything yet until we win the World Series, but watch, something will happen in the last game and we'll lose, just like the last time."
Red Sox fans are cautious, almost to a fault. It's like they just know something will happen.
Does the name Bill Buckner ring a bell?
The Sox are playing another "Big Red Machine" in the St. Louis Cardinals, and the so called "experts" are not giving the Sox much hope, although, as of today, October 25th, the Red Sox have a 2-0 lead over the Redbirds.
The "experts" were wrong before and they may be wrong again.
Enjoy the World Series ride Red Sox Nation. You, your team, and your town deserve it.
Now, before you ask me -- yes, I was unhappy to see that My New York Yankees didn't make it to another Fall classic.
