Having qualified from tournaments held across the country, 24 junior beach volleyball teams are battling to win gold medals in the 39th Annual AAU Junior Olympics. Coconut Beach in New Orleans serves as the site of this prestigious event, in which four gold medals are at stake.

Sunday’s action was pool play format for the teams, playing the best of three to 21 with a tie breaker game to 15 if needed. The teams then advance to a playoff bracket to determine the winners of the four divisions, which are based on age and gender.

In the Girls U17 division, Lauren Law and Rachel Morris, both of Manhattan Beach, Calif., won their pool after winning all three matches and not giving up more than 14 points in any game. Winning the other pool were sisters Caitlin and Jenna Shawver from Lauderdale by the Sea, Fla. The Shawvers, who won the AAU event in Ft. Myers, Fla., in June, also won all three or their pool play matches to advance to Tuesday’s playoffs.

In the Boys U17 division, Redondo Beach, Calif. residents Corey Palmer and Phillip Solomon went 5-0 in pool play with one more pool play match left. Twice they needed a deciding third game to win, including a slim 21-16, 17-21, 17-15 win over Alex Dufek and Christopher Kraul, who are also from Redondo Beach, Calif. Dufek and Kraul, who have won two AAU tournaments this season, finished with a 5-1 pool play record.

There were three pools in the Girls U14 division, and all three pool winners swept their three pool play matches. Alyssa Anderson of Hermosa Beach, Calif., and Emma White of Manhattan Beach, Calif., winners of the Girls AAU National Championships in July, Tara Roenicke, of Alta Loma and Elizabeth Younglove, of Corona, who placed second in the AAU National Championships, and Gabriella Collazo, from San Juan, P.R. and Camila Rosado, from Aguas Buenas, P.R., who had won the AAU stop in Chicago, all advanced with a perfect record.

The Boys U14 division has progressed to the championship match, which will be held at 8:00 pm (ET) on Tuesday. Vaun Lennon, of Westchester, Calif., and Dylan Ramey, of Manhattan Beach, Calif. will battle Jupiter, Fla. residents Dane Lux and Elliot Taylor, who won the Ft. Myers event in June. Lennon and Ramey also competed this year on the same indoor team in the Junior Olympics in Kentucky.

Other finals schedule for Tuesday include the Girls U17 championship at 9:10 pm, the Girls U14 championship at 10:00 pm, and the Boys U17 championship at 10:50 pm.
