There's some bad news for Red Sox fans.

Somewhere, someplace deep in the bowels of hell there is a file cabinet, and in that file cabinet there is a contract for a soul with George Steinbrenner's name signed in blood at the bottom.

The good news is...

It's dated for tomorrow, October 20, 2004 at 11 pm while Pedro is on the mound as a reliever striking out Hideko Matsui in the bottom of the ninth for the final out.

That's right, this could be the year for Boston in sports; the Pats have 20 wins in a row erasing all of their past demons, and now the Red Sox are on the same brink of greatness, as they began tonight by tying up the ALCS from a three game deficit in the house that Ruth built.

Hey Yankees fans, can you feel that? It's either the fall chill, or maybe it's the ghost of the Babe finally turning his back on you and allowing this curse to be put to rest.

This team has faced adversity and up to this point kicked its arse, and almost everyone has contributed including the guys acquired by GM Theo Epstein during the off-season.

P Keith Foulke went above and beyond last night holding off a Yankee offense, and giving the bullpen a much-needed rest for game seven.

What about the intestinal fortitude (god bless Monsoon) of P Curt Schilling pitching seven innings on a freshly sutured right ankle with blood seeping from the bandages. His performance is up there with QB Drew Bledsoe's back to back heroics with a broken finger on his throwing hand. Curt Schilling is the Kerri Strug of this team, what a performance.

What else can be said of DH David (Big Papi) Ortiz? If this team gets past the Yankees tomorrow night he should be named MVP of the series. His bats have left a sting in the Yankees pitching rotation, and yet they still don't walk him as I thought they should have on several occasions during this series.

SS Orlando Cabrera is making a lot of people forget about the fact that Nomar Garciaparra was traded away as he is putting up better numbers than Yankees SS Derek Jeter who is playing the field well, but is missing a part of his bat this series.

LF Manny Ramierz RBI numbers are down, but it's misleading because earlier in the series he had a struggling CF Johnny Damon and 2B Mark Belhorn ahead of him. I'm hoping to see Manny do some damage tonight, now that Bill Mueller has been moved into the second spot and is carrying a better stick.

CF Johnny Damon had a hit last night, but for the series he has been null and void when talking about offense at the plate. His swing timing seems to be off, and at times may be infected with the same virus ?- chokeitus -- that affected SS Nomar Garciaprra over the years during the playoffs. Tonight could be the night for him to bounce back as Belhorn did with his 4th inning HR last night with two men on.

1B Kevin Millar has had a good bat this series, but for strategy reasons he has been subbed with 1B Doug Mientkiewicz who is also strong at first base.

C Jason Varitek wailed off three hits last night, but if Wakefield starts tomorrow they may have to go with C Doug Mirabelli to handle catching the knuckleball. Then bring Jason in when Walkefield bows out.

RF Gabe Kapler has been flying under the radar at bat, and his defense has been the same, as the Yankees seem to like working the left side and middle of the field, which to me is the strong side of the Red Sox defense.

2B Mark Belhorn was on his way to being the biggest thorn in this team's side, and was probably one scratch away from having M Tony Francona put 2B Pokey Reese in his place, but he must have felt Belhorn was due to come up big, by moving him to batting 9th was a move that almost came too late.

I also can't forget to mention the MLB umpires who up to this point hadn't had much part in the drama of this series until last night. Belhorn's blast had clearly made it over the wall, stuck a fan, and landed back into the field of play, but Belhorn was held up at second until after an umpire tribunal it was ruled a home run. The 2 RBI double then became a 3-point homer giving the Red Sox a strong advantage in the top of the 4th inning. Then it happened, the Yankees got desperate, and shot themselves in the foot giving the Red Sox some serious momentum.

Bottom of the eight Bronson Arroyo replaced Curt Schilling, and SS Derek Jeter got a 1 RBI single bringing 3B Alex Rodriguez to the plate with 1 out and the Yankees down by 2. Arroyo got the count to 2 balls/2 strikes and A-Rod hit a soft grounder to the left of the first base line. Arroyo scooped it up and went to tag A-Rod. From the camera angle you see the ball fall loose, and roll towards the dugout as Jeter burned a trail for home and scored. Fans across New England almost died in unison until a replay showed A-Rod clearly swatting the wrist of Bronson Arroyo as he made the tag. The umps confer in a tribunal once more, rule the play interference calling A-Rod out, and returned Jeter to first base. This was the first the nail in the Yankees coffin for the night as the Red Sox played hard ball to put this team away, set up a game seven in New York.

Is it I, or have the Red Sox hired the same scriptwriters employed by the New England Patriots?

If they do, then I can see them getting two of the three monkeys off their backs by finally getting past the Yankees for a shot in the World Series. Thus, setting up a possible match up against the Houston Astros if they eliminate the St Louis Cardinals tomorrow. If so, and since the AL won the All Star game earlier this year meaning the Sox will have home field advantage setting up game one here for Saturday night and possibly being P Roger Clemens going against P Pedro Martinez.

Imagine the possibilities... Priceless!
