Rachel Aragon, of Whittier, and Jennifer Bonilla, of Reseda, won the U14 division and also earned their ticket to New Orleans.
In the two boys divisions that qualified winners for New Orleans, there were repeat winners from the season opening tournament in Santa Barbara in May, so the second place finishers qualified for the AAU Junior Olympic Games. Redondo Beach’s Alex Dufek and Chris Kraul defended the victory they had to begin the year in the U17 division, so the qualification spot went to fellow Redondo Beach residents Corey Palmer and Philip Solomon. Likewise, in the U14 division, Thomas Belknap, of Hermosa Beach, and Devon Hatcher, of Los Osos, repeated their win, so qualifying for New Orleans were the second-place finishers; Vaun Lennon, from Westchester, and Dylan Ramey, from Manhattan Beach.
Eight-year old Sara Hughes of Costa Mesa, and nine-year old Justine Wong-Orantes of Lakewood, defended the title they won last year at Long Beach in the U10 division. Manhattan Beach’s Emma White won the U14 division for the second straight year, this time with Niki Collier, also of Manhattan Beach.
Michele Gonzales, of Inglewood, and Taylor Nieman, of Redondo Beach, combined to win the U15 division, while the U19 title went to Ali Daley of Grass Valley and Nicole Vargas of Seal Beach.
Cole Fiers, from Palos Verdes, and Redondo Beach’s Walker Marks won the U10 boys division, while a pair of Huntington Beach residents, Matt Butler and Grady Zant, won the U12 division. Long Beach resident Cody Watten won his second tournament of the year, this time teaming up with Newport’s Jeff Carlson to claim the U15 crown. Joey Dykstra, of Hermosa Beach, and Dustin Watten, of Long Beach, won the U19 division.
The AAU Beach Volleyball Tour is a partner with the Association of Volleyball Professionals and a member of USA Volleyball, and includes 13 stops in five different states plus Puerto Rico. The tour is highlighted by the 2005 AAU Junior Olympic Games in New Orleans, an international event which consists of 24 different sports and requires qualification by the athletes.
The next event on the Cobra AAU Junior Beach Volleyball Tour takes place on June 19, as the AAU Junior Florida Open, featuring two girls divisions (U14 and U17), will take place in Orlando at Disney’s Grand Floridian Beach Resort. That event takes place immediately following the AAU Junior National Girls (Indoor) Volleyball Championships at Disney's Wide World of Sports.
