In the 2008 Stanley Cup Finals, the Pittsburgh Penguins lost to the Detroit Red Wings in a hard fought series. Now, they're going to play again for the 2009 Cup, and this time the Penguins are hoping for a different result.
Without question, these two teams are ready to do it again, and on Saturday, May 30, hockey fans will see a repeat of last year's Stanley Cup Finals begin.
Penguins' superstar Sidney Crosby (aka "Sid the Kid") says, "this year will be different than last year."
Last year, Crosby and his teammates, many of whom had never even been to the playoffs, let alone the finals, might have been in awe of the Red Wings. But then who could blame them. Detroit is after all, the "big red machine" of hockey.
Now, the Penguins are a year older and more than ready this time.
While the Red Wings took five games to win the Western Conference Finals against the Chicago Black Hawks, the Penguins swept the Carolina Hurricanes in four games to win the Eastern Conference Finals.
However, there's none of that "we're so happy to be in the finals" nonsense for the Penguins this year. This year, they're a team on a mission and focused on bringing the Stanley Cup to the "Steel City."
The Red Wings, who by the way are the defending Stanley Cup Champions, will have a thing or two to say about that though.
"We love this time of the year," says Detroit goaltender, Chris Osgood.
He's right. They don't rebuild in Detroit, they reload. During the off season, they added another piece to the puzzle-Marian Hossa. Last year, Hossa was also in the Stanley Cup Finals, but as a member of the Penguins. You can bet the house on it the good hockey fans of Pittsburgh will welcome Hossa back warmly every time he touches the puck.
The Penguins may be on a mission to win the Stanley Cup, but so are the Red Wings – a team that seems to get stronger during the playoffs every season and are determined to keep the Cup in Detroit.
It should be a great series!
