Yes, it's very early in the season, but it's never too early to start handing out the MLB awards. And the winners are…

Most surprising AL Team: Baltimore Orioles
The Orioles are in second place in the AL East with an 11-9 record. After losing Erik Bedard and Miguel Tejada, their best pitcher and offensive player, the Orioles were expected to struggle all year long. But they have come out the gates strong, sweeping Seattle in a four-game series, and winning a series against the New York Yankees. It's a long season, but as of now they are the biggest surprise.

Most surprising NL Team: Florida Marlins
The Marlins are in top spot in the NL East at 12-8. Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis were traded in the off-season, and this year looked like another one of those wire-to-wire last place seasons. But, the Marlins have managed to get off to the best start in their division, out-performing the favored Mets, Phillies and Braves.

They beat the Braves in a three-game series in the third week of the season. As expected Hanley Ramirez has been an offensive juggernaut (.365 6HR 16 RBIs). But, Scott Olsen has been a pleasant surprise on the mound (3-0 2.60 ERA). It is still doubtful that the Marlins can keep this up.

AL MVP: Manny Ramirez
Leading the league in RBIs with 20, and batting .342 with 6 HRs. He has torched the rival Yankees this year.

NL MVP: Chipper Jones
Jones is batting a gaudy .430, leading the majors along with 19 RBIs. The veteran hasn't skipped a beat thus far.

AL Cy Young: Cliff Lee
Lee is 3-0 0.40 ERA. When you talk about Cleveland's rotation it's always about C.C. Sabathia and Fausto Carmona. Lee has been the forgotten man due to his exile last season. Right now he's been MLB's best pitcher.

NL Cy Young: Brandon Webb
Webb is 5-0 2.31 ERA and is the ace of the Arizona Diamondbacks who have the best record in baseball at 15-5. Arizona is looking like a favorite to go far in the play-offs, and this is largely because of Webb's dominance.

Most Disappointing Team: Detroit Tigers
The Tigers are 7-13 and currently reside in last place in the AL central. They came out the gates at 1-7. This team was picked by many to win it all and many believe they have one of the most potent line-ups of all time. With a middle line up featuring Miguel Cabrera, Magglio Ordonez, Gary Sheffield and Carlos Guillen, not many would disagree.

The vaunted offense has struggled at the start. They are 20th in the majors in runs scored, 14th in batting average, hitting .258 as a team, and they are 18th in home runs with only 16. Their pitching, which was perceived to be their weak link, has been abysmal, ranking 29th out of 30 teams with a hefty 5.45 ERA.

Yes, it is still very early and there is more than enough times to turn things around, but after the first 20 games. The Detroit Tigers are definitely baseball's most disappointing team.

Most Disappointing Player: Frank Thomas
This was a close battle between Thomas and David Ortiz, but future Hall of Famer Thomas, after getting off to a horrendous start batting .167, was released by the Toronto Blue Jays. Released! It is rare that a player of such credentials, and ability would be released so early in the season. What a disappointment.

Most Surprising Player: Ryan Church
The Mets acquired Church mostly expecting him to be a "role" player. Instead, he is leading the Mets in hitting at .338 and runs scored with 17. In addition, he has played great defense in right field. So far he has provided much more than expected.

Most Outrageous Quote: Hank Steinbrenner
Steinbrenner, who is picking up right where his dad left off, already had donned the nickname "Headline Hank" and he doesn't disappoint. He already had stated that he wanted to acquire Johan Santana, but was talked out of it by Yankees GM Brian Cashman. He also stated that people "would be held accountable" if this move came back to haunt the Yankees. Now with the Yankees at 10-10 and the starters struggling. (7-9 5.33 ERA) Steinbrenner, feeling uneasy lashed out: "I want him (Joba Chamberlain) as a starter and so does everyone else, including him, and that is what we are working toward and we need him there now. There is no question about it, you don't have a guy with a 100-mile-per-hour fastball and keep him as a set-up guy. You just don't do that. You have to be an idiot to do that."

Weirdest Managerial Move: Girardi pitching to Ramirez with first base open
This was the situation: April 13, 2008, Fenway Park sixth inning. The Yankees are leading the Red Sox 2-1, runners on second and third, two outs, Manny Ramirez is up. Girardi goes to the mound and confers with Mike Mussina. Mussina states that he would rather pitch with caution to Ramirez than walk Ramirez and face Kevin Youkilis with the bases loaded.

Girardi concedes to Mussina's idea and Ramirez promptly crushes a double, two runs score. The Red Sox take a 3-2 lead and would go on to win 8-5.

Why in the world do you pitch to Manny there?

Saying Manny Ramirez has owned the Yankees is the understatement of the year. Ramirez had hit .364 against the Yankees in his career, but he had hit .456 against the Yankees since the beginning of 2006. He has 53 home runs and 156 RBIs against the Yankees, and is one of the best clutch hitters and RBI men of all time. With first base open, in this situation, there is no other move but to walk him.
