Dennis Caughman has previously been a sports director of his campus radio station, written sports articles in his weekly hometown newspper and currently works as a media content manager at a CBS television station. He owns a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication from Texas State University and an Associate of Arts in English from Blinn College. As we approach the halfway point of the college football season, I have begun to reflect on a quote from a popular ESPN Analyst Lee Corso. The words went sort of like this, "Steve Spurrier will never win an SEC Championship at the University of South Carolina. The SEC cannot be won at the University of South Carolina."
Well, it looks like someone may be about to eat their words.
After disposing of Kentucky and their so called Heisman Trophy candidate, the Gamecocks sit atop the SEC East and are ranked No. 7 in the country. It irritates me to hear the "big time" analysts act as though they are the authority when it comes to sports. Where do these people get their information and think they are so highly knowledgeable about everything going on in the world of sports?
Obviously Corso was not thinking about Spurrier and the fact he has proven a winner at every college football institution he has ever coached. He took Duke from a nobody and took them to a bowl game, and we don't really have to mention what he did at Florida. The record and national championship, not to mention all the SEC East championships, speak for themselves. Yeah, he did not win with the Washington Redskins, but there is such a big difference between the NFL and college, that it really doesn't matter.
Last year, Spurrier brought in the a top 5 recruiting class at South Carolina and is now in the process of getting another great class and is well on his way to bringing the championship crown to South Carolina. I'm not sure if all the Gamecock faithful were expecting to win the SEC this year, but after top notch wins over Georgia and Kentucky, it looks as though this may be the year. The schedule is favorable the rest of the way for the Gamecocks. Although they have a tough one at Tennessee, they get to play Florida at home and that is looking like the game that will clinch it for the Gamecocks. What better way to win an SEC East title, then to do it against his old team, the Gators.
I just hope that when the Gamecocks do win the East, that I don't hear Corso saying the SEC has a down year and they beat up on each other and make an excuse for South Carolina winning the SEC.
Ever heard of the expression, "It's best to keep your mouth shut unless you know the truth?" That is exactly what Corso should have done when he was asked the question about what Spurrier's chances were of winning the SEC at South Carolina.
Sometimes in the great big world of ESPN, the analysts try to take a chance on looking good and make a bold prediction like Corso's, but it's looking more and more like it is going to back fire big time on him. Maybe even Corso thinks people have forgotten his words, but a little piece of advice to him from the Gamecock faithful, "We don't forget anything."
Go Cocks!!
