Sports has always been fascinating to Madan Gopal, with three of them very dear to his heart: cricket, tennis and F-1. Rahul Dravid, Roger Federer and Kimi Raikkonen are also his favorite athletes. Gopal is looking forward to sharing his views on topics related to these sports quite regularly, while completing his PhD in Materials Science from the University of Alabama in Huntsville.

It comes as total surprise to me that instead of focusing on a very rare overseas series win for India, the English and Indian print media are busy sharpening their knives to dive into the Indian captain's decision of not enforcing follow-on, in spite of a 319 run first innings lead. Is it a common trend in the media nowadays just to overlook the positives and keep on harping about the negatives? Read on to find out this writers opinion.

The media should be more unbiased in their reporting of sports.

It comes as total surprise to me that instead of focusing on a very rare overseas series win for India, the English and Indian print media are busy sharpening their knives to dive into the Indian captain's decision of not enforcing follow-on, in spite of a 319 run first innings lead. Well, I totally understand the explanation given by Rahul Dravid. No matter what you and I say on his decision, it's his final call. Trust me, it would not have been decided without consulting the team. So the seniors, bowlers, the bowling and fielding coaches and Chandu Borde will all have been involved in this decision. This is, after all, a team sport and all the members of the team would have shared their views to the skipper.

Another section, although in minority, is of the opinion that it came against a mediocre bowling attack. Well, the ironic, yet funny thing, is the fact that had India lost, the same section would have said that India could not even win against a mediocre bowling attack but if India wins, they take the gloss off with their negative report.

Personally, I think the media should be more classy and unbiased in their reporting. Report the facts as they are. You or I sitting in a room cannot, and should not, imagine what is going on in Dravid or Sachin Tendulkar or Sourav Ganguly's mind. They are the talented few who are representing our country and have made us proud. Let us be supportive of their efforts.

Finally, coming to the actual cricket, India was definitely the better team in the series. All the major batsmen contributed, and perhaps the icing on the cake was the fact that India's only century in the tests came via the great warrior Anil Kumble's bat. A player like him is priceless and invaluable for any team.

As for the big four, they did their job and made us happy. Ganguly was spectacular, Tendulkar was terrific and VVS Laxman was great too. Dravid did not have a high scoring series by his standards, but held together the team in a spirited fashion. However, the find of the tour for me was the young lad called Dinesh Karthik. You will hear his name for years to come!

As for the bowlers, Zaheer Khan was sensational. RP Singh and S Sreesanth were supportive and hats off to Venkatesh Prasad for his coaching efforts. We might have to wait for a long time before we get to see the likes of another Dravid, Tendulkar, Ganguly or Laxman. Till then, let us be happy that they played during our times and watching them in a win or loss has been very pleasing to the eyes.

Hats off Team India and hats off to the Famous Five! Thanks for providing us the joy and happiness through your play and conduct. It is a lesson to all of us that no matter how high we go in our careers, we need to be humble and respectful to others. These great cricketers are not just great in their profession but also great ambassadors for the country.
