Reggie Bush just might be the second coming of Barry Sanders. From a football and fantasy football perspective, the excitement regarding Bush continues to build. Even as the supposed second fiddle in the backfield, chances are high that Bush will end up as the offensive Rookie of the Year in the NFC. Here are the reasons why he will succeed and the thoughts behind his soon to be fantasy stardom.

Will Reggie Bush be an NFL star or an NFL bust?

Now that both of my fantasy football drafts have concluded, it is time to evaluate the potential for a successful season. In every draft there are hits and misses, but in my opinion, Reggie Bush is the most significant wildcard this year. I will preface this article by saying that I drafted Bush in both of my leagues.

As painful as it has been to be a life-long Detroit Lions fan, watching Hall-of-Famer Barry Sanders at least kept me glued to the television. Bush is the first running back since Sanders that inspires comparisons with his impressive combination of vision, quickness and ability to change direction.

Here in lies the dilemma for fantasy players. Bush's SportsCenter highlights look amazing, but a number of questions remain unanswered in regards to his actual statistical performance.

With Deuce McAllister also playing a role in New Orleans as he recovers from an knee injury, it remains to be seen how may touches Bush will receive per game. The perception is that Sean Payton, the Saints new head coach and offensive mastermind previously under Bill Parcells, will find a way to get the ball into Busch's hands 15-20 times each game day.

My guess is that with Bush's talent, not to mention the financial investment made in the number two overall draft pick, chances are fairly high that this will occur. The Saints decision to trade wide receiver Donte Stallworth to the Philadelphia Eagles may actually lead to Bush being used even more as a pass receiver out of the backfield or in the slot.

Other options for number two backs included the likes of Warrick Dunn and Kevin Jones. They may produce solid fantasy campaigns, but the upside and the keeper value are much more significant in the case of Bush.

In the mid- to late-second round, it would be possible to draft an upper tier wide receiver, as well. But, the receiver crop is much deeper and solid players can be had in the fifth or sixth rounds. For the most part, after the first two rounds you may be looking at veteran backs, some of whom have passed their prime.

Corey Dillon, for instance, may post nice numbers, but he comes with some injury concerns, and the fact that he is part of the dreaded running back by committee system, as he will share carries with Laurence Maroney damages his overall standing.

Following the unfortunate devastation that resulted from Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans would benefit from a player with star-power. The initial excitement and hype regarding Bush is evidence of this as his jersey-collectible sales continue to skyrocket.

The Saints may not accumulate many victories this year, partially due to a fairly brutal schedule, but Bush should provide a weekly dose of excitement for the City of New Orleans.

I gambled in each of my drafts that the build-up surrounding Bush will translate into the ever elusive fantasy football championship. Frequent stat tracker checks are on the horizon and New Orleans has suddenly become an intriguing destination to monitor on the NFL map.
