The schedule does not begin until July 29th, but the Albany Ambush have been preparing for the season behind the scenes with a determination to not only compete, but to bring home the "hardware." Standing in their way are many capable teams, with the main target being the reigning two-time Women's Professional Football League champions, the Dallas Diamonds.
What will it take to dethrone the "top dog?"
An off-season conditioning program that will get the players ready to have what it takes is the first step. Especially when you consider that the games will be played in the heat and humidity of the summer. Full contact tackle football, wearing helmets and pads with no "easy" days, such as the NFL has during training camp with light workouts sans certain equipment.
The Albany Ambush will be ready to go due to their strength, speed and stamina training, but they will not be alone in doing so. The Women's Professional Football League is the marquee women’s football league, and the most talented players are here. All the teams must elevate their level of play to remain the top league.
Albany will put their players to the test on opening day at home in the "Capital Bowl Classic" versus the Empire State Roar. One game does not a season make, but what better way to kick off the schedule than to defeat your geographical rival in front of your home crowd and win a trophy, as well?
A tall order, no doubt, but the Ambush will have to formulate a defensive game plan to control the Roar's ground attack, which is led by All-Pro running back Nikia Speed.
The passing game will not any easier to stop either, with 5'11" 195 pound quarterback, Jenna Herington. Coming into her third year in the league, Herington has the experience, and with proper protection can pick a team apart. The Ambush must look to pressure her into rushing her throws and keep her on the run.
To reach the post-season, the Ambush will have to start off hot, especially being in the American Conference with the Dallas Diamonds, who have not lost a game since 2003.
Returning All-Pro players will give Albany an edge to make the dream possible. Meghan Ireland, Talisha Hargis, Cynthia Suggs and Melissa Cruz will be back and look to continue their all-star performance. Cruz made the All-Pro team as a rookie in 2005 and will only improve with experience.
Albany will play to the final gun every game with the intensity needed to win. The name of the game is to come out on top when the clock shows all zeroes. Fans should expect nothing less.
