Leading up to the NBA draft, very few people knew which players were going to which teams. However, once the Bobcats made their pick, the question became -- did Bob Johnson and Michael Jordan pick Adam Morrison for the right reasons? This question has two parts -- part of the question can be answered now and part can be answered later.
Going into last week's NBA draft, there were many questions surrounding who the Charlotte Bobcats were going to draft. Living in Charlotte, the word was out that it could be Rudy Gay, Adam Morrison or Brandon Roy.
Each of those players could make a case for being drafted by the Bobcats. Gay is a tall athletic player with "potential," Morrison is a scoring machine who makes some think of Larry Bird, while Roy seems to be the best "all-around player."
The last two seasons were somewhat challenging for the up and coming Bobcats. The fans were not filling the seats due to high ticket prices, the team was not winning games and some people in the city were a little disenchanted that the owner did not actually live in Charlotte.
So, going into next season, the question was, how are the Bobcats going to change the status of the variables in and around the team?
To start, Johnson decided to make a few moves. He fired the head of basketball operations, Ed Tapscott, and hired Michael Jordan as a minority owner who will be responsible for making the major basketball decisions for the team.
Even though Jordan may have had, what some would call, a negative experience in Washington where he was the president of the team, he still seemed like a good fit for Charlotte. He attended University of North Carolina, has family in the state and... well, he may be the greatest player of all time.
Johnson also hired a top manager from Bank of America in Charlotte, which was important because it connected the team to what's a very important industry in Charlotte -- banking.
Another move Johnson made was to lower ticket prices. This was an important move to show the fans that he is concerned and cares about his customer.
However, the one major thing that has to take place in order to bring in more fans, is to have the Bobcats start winning. So, the next move was to add another player to the mix that would help the team take it to the next level.
The question was who? The answer was Adam Morrison, who Charlotte took with the third pick in the draft.
Some people felt that Jordan and the Bobcats had to pick this guy because he was the most marketable. Morrison already had a few commercials on television even before he was drafted. So his face was starting to surface in viewers homes, and he was becoming a known commodity.
Some people felt that since the Bobcats organization is majority owned by an African American that it would be smart to draft a very good Caucasian player. I even heard one particular Caucasian person say that Johnson would only hire people from his race and that drafting Morrison could be the change that would make him start attending games.
In response to that, for Johnson to be in the position he currently holds, there is no doubt that at some point and time he has done business with all races. Money is not white or black, it's green. So I'm not sure if the above thoughts are very accurate. Nonetheless, some people felt the comments were accurate. So the question was, do you draft Morrison for public relation reasons?
Some people asked if this was the guy Jordan wanted? Jordan had to make a good decision coming off the Kwame Brown pick he made in Washington a few years ago. Some critics and fans felt that he made some below average decisions in Washington, therefore this pick was big for him. "Control" was the main thing Jordan said he needed to be apart of the Bobcats team, so in saying that, you would have to think that Morrison was Mike's guy.
Personally, I think the Bobcats did get Morrison for all the right reasons. He is marketable, but low key, and he attracts a fan base that the Bobcats didn't have.
However, more importantly, the guy can play! All last season, Morrison proved that he could score against anybody. He showed heart every time he played. He was a winner in college and he should be able to bring that energy to the Bobcats. Morrison fills a position on the team that is very much needed, which is a scoring guard that can hit from the perimeter.
At the end of the day, it appears that the Bobcats made the best pick for their organization. If you really think about it, it was a no-brainer.
